I decided to give this book another chance, this time by opting for the audiobook during my long walks. Nevertheless, the story left me feeling that it neither progressed nor reached a satisfying conclusion. The author's writing style seemed excessively verbose, as if she felt compelled to use every word in her vocabulary. In my opinion, the story could have been wrapped up in half its length, without losing its essence. The one aspect I truly appreciated throughout the book was the depiction of human relationships in all their complexity. The author skillfully portrayed how people interact with each other through thick and thin, during times of abundance and scarcity. It was particularly interesting to observe how humans tend to be more generous and willing to share when they have less, as opposed to when they have more. In summary, this book may not be for everyone, and the lengthy narrative might be a hurdle. However, it does offer a perceptive exploration of human behavior and relationships, which can make it a thought-provoking read for those with the patience for its wordy style.

Favorite lines from the book:

  • Courage is fear you ignore.

  • Love is what remains when everything else is gone.

  • It wasn’t the fear that mattered in life. It was the choices made when you were afraid. You were brave because of your fear, not in spite of it.

  • I say folks who hang on to the past miss their chance for a future.

  • Love. In the best of times, it is a dream. In the worst of times, a salvation.

  • When times is tough and jobs is scarce, folks blame the outsider. It’s human nature.
